Let’s face it, the older a person is the harder you have to think about the perfect birthday gift. Get a kid something that bounces and yer set. But a person past 70, hey – they’ve mastered every bouncy thing out there. So, for Tony’s grandmother’s 90th, we were in for a challenge to properly honor the family’s matriarch. After some probing into any childhood memories she’s shared or quirky interests she’s expressed, we landed on a stroke of creativity. Tony’s grandmother has lived in various cities throughout her long life and we decided to take her on a mini trip via little brown packages containing an item representing/originating from each place. We found vintage postcards on ebay from each state to label each package. And, when she hits 100 – maybe, we’ll top this year’s gift with a train ticket to each place (or go in her stead and properly document it with video “postcards”).
Here is the lineup of the items: Texas – BBQ sauce; Arkansas – persimmons (her favorite fruit) and a Johnny Cash CD; New Orleans – “Beasts of the Southern Wild” DVD; Denver – western shirt from the famous Rockmount; Washington D.C. – political nonfiction book (can’t recall the title); and West Virginia – a portrait of Tony and his siblings.
