Yurei Cafe

Gimme Gimme Pillow Toast! puts on some seriously original events. I’ve been following these Japanese/Asian pop lovin’ fools since I discovered their now closed brick and mortar shop (in Lakewood, CO) where I purchased my favorite winter hat of all time. I am having a hard time replacing that hat after San Francisco thieves made off with it and my camera bag – mainly because the key search words “beanie hat with ears” and  “fat albert eye mask hat” turn up some entertaining but fruitless leads. Seriously, if anyone can track down the hat I’m wearing below, clue me in, yo!

I would like to replace this bitchin' hat!

Anyway… This year GGPT’s Halloween contribution was a one night only Japanese horror themed restaurant – Yurei (ghost) Cafe. They took over a location near downtown, dressed the place up with props and performers invoking Japanese folk tales and horror films, and served a three course vegetarian/vegan friendly meal. Upon entering, our pictures were taken (I assume in order to better identify the bodies later, muhawha) and we were lead to a small box and a pale Lolita dressed girl telling us to take the huge chopsticks and separate the bones of a dearly departed one onto a plate – which was a bit of a challenge especially with the smaller bones to large chopsticks ratio. The best part of the evening was the “floor show” – characters sneaking up on diners, a young ghostly boy jetting to and fro, a Shinto priest attempting to cleanse spirits at each table. It was great fun and the food was tasty though I didn’t care for the mochi ice cream, I mean, fresh eyes…and the food order card reminded me that I really need to learn my blood type…

The Floor Show - Fortune Paper, Doll Pyre, Separating Bones of a Dead Loved One, Mystery Woman in White Giving Out Pretty Smiles

The Food - Lots of Yummy Vegetarian Options! My veggie burger left my hands black from what I'm assuming was squid ink.

"Bat Shoe" - attire for the evening
