Long before we made the decision to build up our “farm life” in West Virginia (starting with the necessary “farm house”), Tony spent a season in 2011 at his mom’s place – dubbed Free Earth Farm though it’s not a working farm – to experiment with growing vegetables on a large scale and raising animals (6 heritage pigs, half ossabaw half mulefoot). I went out to see him every month for a week or two to visit, lend a hand, and document his experience (antics from those times can be seen in past blog posts – such as Garlic Harvesting). The bulk of the footage lay dormant as other pressing matters took my attention away from making anything of it (didn’t HBO’s “Game of Thrones” premiere that year?)…until this month, when a certain someone’s birthday was rolling up. I thought it would be a fantastic gift idea to whip up a short documentary and surprise Tony while he’s at the threshold of a farming reality with a slice of his past aspiring farmer self. I coupled the video with the book “Farm Anatomy: The Curious Parts and Pieces of Country Life” – a delightfully illustrated cheater that is a fun browser for the country naive and aware alike.
