When we completed our front yard fence we decided to attach solar lanterns on the posts to add that necessary guidance for those late night home arrivals. Sticking with this mini solar panel eco theme, I wanted to find a unique way to light up the backyard deck for those late night home stay-ins.
(Okay, so before I went all DIY Earth saver, I bought these wonderfully tacky flamingo light covers off ebay. Couldn’t resist the kitsch.)
I’d seen tutorials in the past on how to make Sun Jars – remove the top of a cheap solar panel path light from the stake and placing it in/on a mason jar – and thought it a creative, affordable modification to the standard light – plus it became portable and less offensive to vampires. Unfortunately, I didn’t really like how my first attempt turned out and for some reason (laziness) wasn’t invested enough to paint/frost the jars so I decided to put my own twist on the Sun Jar project. I stuck with the re-purposing route but instead found milk glass vases at the thrift store with just the right sized openings for the solar panel tops to fit snugly in place without any adhesive (but, if you must, I found just a ring of hot glue works perfectly) – voila Sun Vases, kooky cousins of Sun Jars. This personal take on a DIY idea brought to my recent backyard fete a one of a kind piece, re-using all those flower tombs to harness the power of the sun! “Rays” the roof! (Ugh, couldn’t help the bad pun ending. I blame the same tackiness that won that ebay auction for the flamingo lights.)
