Olympic Fourth of July

These two win top honor for participating in each Olympic activity plus their clothes were kinda in sync so they didn't have to do much in the pools to convince us!!

To inaugurate our completed deck (and the fireworks vantage point from it) we hosted a Fourth of July cook out. I added a theme – The Olympic Games – which fit well with the usual red white and blue decor of the holiday and hand delivered as many invites as I could while Tony phoned in the rest. Along with sparklers and photos with Olde Glory, the expected Fourth of July regalia, we had Olympic themed activities for our guests to enjoy. And though a few of the activities were really just props, I was delighted to see that even those got some shine. Case in point: Synchronized Swimming (pools) – a pair of matching baby pools. A few contestants put together last minute routines suitable for an ankle deep dip. Warms my hostess heart. Below are snapshots and explanations of the activities. We utilized a lot of everyday items that could play just as well at an un-themed backyard BBQ.

3 versions of targets printed off the web (vintage western, william tell, and zombie) taped onto CDs attached with string to moveable hinges screwed into a 2x4 + Nerf foam bow and arrows = ARCHERY

Identical baby swimming pools = SYCHRONISED SWIMMING

Cooler with Beer propped up on one side = UNEVEN BAR(s)

"Anywhere" table tennis set (much cheaper than the green courts) that fits on any table = TABLE TENNIS

Two bicycles on stationary bicycle stands + two pedometers to synchronise once mounted on bikes + timer set to 30 secs to end race = CYCLING

We also had mini-basketball and a yoga mat with a baton (Gymnastics) in the house. If only I could have figured out how to set up a backyard Pentathlon…
