We harvested what was left of the root veggies (beets, turnips, carrots) and put 1/3 of the garden to bed before leaving on our big vacation. We’re hoping by storing them (unwashed with tops clipped) in the basement mini-fridge they’ll last us through the winter. Most of the carrots crowded because we didn’t thin them. Our laziness (or refusal to kill defenseless baby plants) was rewarded with plump carrot balls outnumbering the usual tapered sticks. We also had a red carrot variety, maroon-skinned with the expected bright orange a shave beneath, which I had never encountered before and Tony says is of French origin. And of course once you let the carrot greens grow they produce carrot flowers which look a lot like Queen Anne’s lace; so fun and rewarding to look at up close – piles and piles of tiny worlds.
