For my gal pal Lunchbox’s (a.k.a. Emily) 30th birthday the secret agent in me dropped a package on her doorstep containing an old school Thermos with an encrypted Flash Drive inside. She had to solve simple math problems on a series of Flash Cards and translate the answers into their alphabet counterparts to spell out the access code – Flash Mob. The drive, once cracked, revealed a “Mission” folder with a link to a video tutorial of a Flash Mob dance routine dubbed “Hairography” happening during our trip to New York City! Flash-y, har har, I’m seeing stars. It was a hit gift and a fall into place coincidence that the mob was occurring on one of the mere two days we would be in NYC for Emily’s birthday celebration/wedding dress hunt! (More on those escapades later).
We became very familiar with the backsides of our Youtube provided dance instructors Staci and Conroe pre-NY and squeezed in one rehearsal at a dance studio in Chelsea morning of the mob. The end result was a surprise all ladies dance number in Times Square (would have preferred Grand Central so we will have to hit that with some sashays en masse on the next trip out east). It was a tiny bummer that our meeting point at Military Island between 44th & 43rd was already cleared and helmed by a noticeable paparazzi station, but the crowd still had no idea what they were grouping around to see (and yet – in a plausibly alternate social experiment – still waited in audience position as nothing seemed to be happening). The event was brought to secret agents everywhere by Flash Mob America and coordinated to raise money for the Women’s Funding Network. Last accounts show the mob raised $10,000 with our hair swinging, shoulder shimmying, “giving it up on the dance floor” moves. Check out the official video below. Another video shot by Emily’s dad showcasing our personal involvement should be ready to view soon.
