I hold no aspirations to appear on reality t.v. nor do I have delusions of game show victory, but the one program I could have seen myself on was Nickelodeon’s Double Dare – so much so that at the height of D.D.’s popularity my brothers & I developed a course in our basement complete with dare ending flags to grab. Physical challenges, obstacle courses, big messes – now that was something I would wear matching t-shirts for! So, when Groupon hit my inbox with a deal on an upcoming “truth or dare” race called City Chase, I grabbed the beau, ignored the heavily sponsored paraphernalia, & made my way to the start line. City Chase is an international urban adventure series – part scavenger hunt part obstacle course. Two person teams are given 6 hours to complete 10 challenges hidden around the city moving from each point with only their legs or public transit. We spent most of our time walking to each challenge, nearly collapsing at the finish line 66th out of over 300 teams.
The worst of it: A challenge hosted by the Marines involving a drill course of lifting two 30 lb. ammunition boxes, crawling, sprinting, push-ups, carrying your partner, and throwing a “grenade” at a target.
The best of it: Challenges involving water. Â A large slip-n-slide and pogo sticking in a pool (which I had to do with a floatation device around my waist to avoid the panic of accomplishing this task while in 6 ft. of water).
Conclusion: Not up to my childhood built Double Dare standards but still an experience worth the sore biceps.
