A Very Good Place to Start

June 2013 Demo

Tony & I as Construction Workers

Before I forge ahead with our West Virginia home story, I’ll take a few steps back and show the beginning stages of “building” – which look more like stages of destruction but, hey, creation from chaos.  There were originally three houses on the land Tony shares with his brother and when they first bought the place they took to returning two of the houses “to dirt” – to quote a home movie Tony’s bro made of the demolition of the two.  One house was kept standing and Tony set to scavenging it for good lumber to store up for future building of our own private plot on paradise.  As the years of neglected pieces were torn away, the shell of the house appeared sturdy and worth keeping so last fall we decided to bring it down to studs and build up from there – saving construction time and money.  What’s left is the framing of a tiny house – about 450 square feet – which we plan to loft for additional space (including a sleeping perch).  Here is a short video featuring segments of the demolition process:

Footage shot by Tony, Sarah (Tony’s mom), Deya (Tony’s sister), and yours truly. Music by Loretta Lynn.
