I don’t know about you but the first thing that comes to mind when I see poppies is the scene of the poppy field in The Wizard of Oz (or the Seinfeld episode about Elaine testing positive for Opium). And that may be my reason for wanting to grow poppies in our garden this year…to get you, my pretty, and your little dog too… That and they are also my favorite flower.
I planted Hungarian Blue Breadseed poppies in a large cedar planter. This variety of poppy is a tall, easy to grow, showy flower with pale purple tissue-like petals that don’t last long after blooming but leave you with a gorgeous pod filled with seeds ready for your baking needs. I was unaware of the brevity of the bloom before I planted them and was a bit disappointed by the quick departure of color – my whole point for adding flowers to our backyard. But as every florist already knows, those darn pods make great decoration. Once they dry out, give ’em a little shake and you’ve got yourself a fairy rattle. I guess I should be baking bagels but for now I’ll settle for a nice centerpiece and maybe some “sleep.”
