Hitting a Wall

The first thing I did when we were near closing on our house was search for wallpaper. I’ve always wanted to throw a pattern on the wall but thought the effort was too much for a rental – not to mention having to remove it upon vacating. On my search, I initially went the vintage route and found a roll on etsy (a pattern that matches the wallpaper in a scene of John Waters’ “Pink Flamingos”) but then I discovered there was a plethora of modern prints being made by artists and designers bringing wallpaper to a level of cool I didn’t know existed. Fast forward to today and every new hip bar is throwing ‘paper on the walls. And then a couple of friends opened Covered in late 2011 a shop devoted to wall art. Holy trend alert! I still have the vintage print but I decided to also go with a modern take on a vintage design and landed on a Graham and Brown wallpaper I found on Design Public. They also have cushion-y wallpaper that you can put over non-smooth, problem surfaces if you don’t want to go through the extra effort of re-mudding your textured walls with Joint Compound, as I did. I am also a fan of these two company’s designs – Warp Your Room & Cavern – but can’t justify the price tag. One tip that may seem too amateur to mention is to get more paper than you think you’ll need and not just a little more like I did. My leftover pieces to finish over the door were plenty but did not match up with the aligning print and now the design is no longer in stock. That’s what I get for waiting nearly two years after buying the materials to complete a project. What a rookie.
