I’m certain this project stemmed from a middle school class assignment but, being a consummate overachiever, I’ve continued the lesson three times over. At milestones (entering high school, graduating college, aging past 30), I’ve written a letter to my future self to be opened 10 years from the writing date. To prevent misplacing it, I keep the letter pinned to a wall in plain sight – doubling as a conversation piece. This exercise is a great way to chart how priorities shift over time and to entertain your future self with the silly woes of younger you. This year, I’ve added the dimension of having my beau write to my future self as well, which I’ll probably relish even more than any blabber I come up with…especially if he’s still around when I open it.
