Team Doppelgänger has decided to return for another season of copycat kickball! The Denver Kickball Coalition’s Draft Party, an evening where kickball-team-seeking hopefuls are introduced to the personalities of the 12 teams in the league, is a week away. And as part of the first official gathering of the 2010 season, Doppelgänger will present a team introduction video…in 3D! I figured it could be entertaining in a “hey, let’s make fun of this trend“ kind of way to match the hype of the 3D movies overtaking theaters today.
Stereoscopic or 3D imaging tricks the eye to perceive depth by presenting a slightly different image to each eye. You’ll need two identical cameras mounted so the center of their lenses line up 2 1/2 inches apart thus capturing the same image from two different perspectives. The magic occurs in the editing process: place the footage from the right camera on top of the footage of the left (Composite Mode – Add on the top footage), desaturate both, and manipulate the Blue, Green, and Red Color Balance on each to make the top footage Cyan and the bottom Red a la 3D anachrome  filter glasses. Check out 4 Minute Film School for details on building a duo-camera tripod and editing the final piece. Below is a snapshot (not in 3D) of the contraption my beau and I assembled (with two borrowed Flips) for our kickball team video shooot. Stay tuned next week for Team Doppelgänger in 3D!
